What is the Panchang?

The Panchang (literally “five limbs”) is the traditional Hindu almanac used to determine auspicious timings. It combines five elements computed from the positions of the Sun and Moon: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, Karana (half-tithi) and Vara (weekday). Together with the lunar month and Paksha (waxing/waning fortnight), they describe the quality of each day.

The five limbs

  • Tithi — the lunar day (Moon−Sun angle / 12°)
  • Nakshatra — the constellation the Moon occupies
  • Yoga — a Sun+Moon combination
  • Karana — half of a tithi
  • Vara — the weekday

Daily muhurat periods

  • Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika — periods to avoid
  • Abhijit Muhurat — the auspicious midday window

All values are computed for your location at local sunrise using sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) calculations, and validated against standard panchang almanacs. Lunar month and Vikram Samvat follow the Amanta / Gujarati (Kartik) reckoning.
